What is the biggest hospital in the Philippines?

With a land area of 46.7 hectares, the National Center for Mental Health in Mauway, Mandaluyong City is the biggest hospital in the country. It has a total capacity of 4200 beds. It caters more than a daily average of 3000 mentally ill in-house patients daily.

Imagine two SM Mall of Asia (the whole reclaimed lot) side by side and you will have an idea how big this hospital is. NCMH has 52 wards and 35 pavillions. The hospital was first established in 1928 as Insular Psychotic Hospital.

I got a chance to tour and do nursing tasks in the hospital for a week during the summer of 2011. For everyone’s information, the pavillion is a cottage or building. Each pavillion has its select group of patients. For example, the general male pavillion houses male patients and the Shangri-La pavillion takes care of minors with mental illnesses. Also, it has a multi purpose gym for seminars. I can still recall my experiences in the hospital which prompted me to respect the mentally ill Filipinos due to their stories.

The biggest non government owned hospital in the Philippines is the University of Sto. Tomas Hospital at Sampaloc, Manila. It has a total capacity of 812 beds and serves as the base hospital of UST. It was founded in 1577 as San Juan de Dios hospital and was later named UST hospital in 1946.

The biggest hospital outside Metro Manila is the Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital in Cebu City with an 800 bed capacity. It was established in 1911 as Hospital del Sur and was later renamed to Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital in 1992 in honor of the late senator.
